Outdoor Learning at Alexandra Hills State School
Exploring, Discovering, Growing Together
At Alexandra Hills State School, Outdoor Learning is a key part of how we help students thrive. We believe that powerful learning doesn’t only happen inside a classroom — the outdoors offers endless opportunities for exploration, discovery, and connection.
Our outdoor spaces are vibrant learning environments where students engage deeply with their world, building essential skills like resilience, creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. Outdoor learning taps into children's natural curiosity, making learning active, meaningful, and fun.
Research shows that time spent learning outdoors can strengthen academic achievement, improve physical health, boost wellbeing, and foster social development. We see these benefits daily — whether students are conducting science experiments in our gardens, writing stories inspired by nature, or tackling team challenges out on the oval.
Our approach to Outdoor Learning also brings our school values of courtesy and courage to life. Students show respect for each other and the environment, and they develop the bravery to step outside their comfort zones, try new things, and lead with confidence.
Outdoor Learning Days: Growing Together as a School Community
Once each term, our entire school community comes together to celebrate a dedicated Outdoor Learning Day. These special days are all about collaboration, sharing, and strengthening our connections across year levels. Students work in multi-age teams, engaging in a range of hands-on activities that encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership.
Outdoor Learning Days are a highlight for our students — a time to learn alongside friends, build new relationships, and experience the joy of working together in the fresh air. They are a living example of how we nurture community spirit, confidence, and a love of learning at Alexandra Hills State School.
At Alexandra Hills, Outdoor Learning isn’t just something we do — it’s a philosophy that helps every child grow, achieve, and connect with the world around them.
